He couldn’t fight the complainant note in his voice or the hint of hurt. Softly, so softly it was almost a whisper, he asked, “Why didn’t you trust me enough to protect you?”
“What are you talking about, Konlan?”
His full name on her lips had his cock throbbing. He paced along the edge of the pool border, keeping her in his line of sight as a low rumbling growl worked its way up his throat. His inner Dracol wasn’t pleased. “I know Ranald threatened you. It’s why you mated him though you’d vowed to be my lira just nights before.”
Brie’s chuckle was weak and her amber eyes took on a glow of rare anger. Breya never got angry. He paused his pacing. She should have come to him! He would have protected her. His growls rose in volume. “Answer me, Breya! For once, tell me the truth of what happened!”
“He didn’t threaten me, Kon.”
At her emphasis, he flinched and took several steps back. He needed the distance so he wouldn’t shake her for lying to him. Nothing else would explain why she’d betrayed him in such a public and humiliating way. She’d loved him. He knew that without a doubt. Unless… “If you say he threatened me, I will toss you back into the ocean.”
